Storage category of appliances are similar to buffers. The main difference is that with buffers the electrical energy only flows in one direction: it is either consumption or generation. With a storage appliance the electrical energy flow is bidirectional. A battery (management system) is a typical example of an appliance in the storage category. The battery may be autonomous, but it may also be part of an electrical vehicle for instance. Storage devices include self-discharging batteries (e.g. Li-In/NiMH batteries), chemical storage batteries with conversion loss (e.g. flow batteries), and mobile storage in electrical vehicles.
